Reading and Writing to enhance Communication Skills

“ Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and  writing an exact man; and, therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory; if he confer little, he had need  have a present wit; and if he read little, he had need have much cunning, to seem to know that he doth not.”

                                                                                                                                    Francis Bacon

Generation Z spends a major chunk of their 24 hours in front of computer monitors, and finds it really unimaginable to spend a few moments away from their smartphones. Currently in the Covid19 pandemic, these devices have become a great tool for almost everyone in every sphere, be it professional or personal. There is no harm in being tech-friendly, but it is advisable that the younger generation should spend some time reading good books and penning down their thoughts if they aspire to be a better communicator.

Communication has become an integral part of our life. Inability to communicate effectively can   jeopardize our professional growth. Humanities is the field that enables people to understand others, communicate with others with that implicit knowledge and act on the impressions with linguistic flair.

The Department of Humanities tries to teach concepts of language, both Hindi & English in innovative ways and helps students to develop the four basic skills of communication –Listening, Speaking, Reading & Writing (LSRW). The methodology integrates on multi-dimensional aspects of language acquisition and expression. Be it a formal email or a letter or an informal expression, when the LSRW aspects are wholly integrated one can express correctly, fluently, logically and impress upon their thoughts to others.

On an individualistic level, writing down one's thoughts and feelings, one's fears and problems is indeed therapeutic. It enables us to sit quietly and observe what is happening emotionally and mentally. Once the problem is defined; we think of a possible way to deal with it. Language therefore also morphs into a therapeutic mode apart from enabling people to forge professional excellence. J.Krishnamurti echoed what Francis Bacon stated that one should write a few pages every day. It can help in everyday life. Gandhiji, too, advised students to keep a diary and make reading and writing a habit to flourish in life.
